Studio Mittens

Studio Mittens is basically the drawing table of me, Tim de Groot.
On this website you’ll find a selection of my animations and illustrations.

Before I got involved in animation-film, I started out as an illustrator, after graduated at the Academy of Art with a Bachelor of Design in Illustration in 2010. I have been working with many different clients to gain experience as a professional independent artist. My way of story-telling got a whole new perspective after a stop-motion course: this was the first experience in animation and gave me an insight of all new possibilities within my work. Obviously, now years later, I totally got caught up in the fascinating world of animation; the feeling of seeing your drawings come to life is hard to let go!

My work can best be described as an old handicraft style. There are lot of mixed techniques going on in my work process, using traditional 2D hand drawn, stop-motion, cut-out and digital effects. I do find it hard to take distance from the drawing table, with all my familiar pencils, ink and charcoal. Luckily I don’t have to move myself very far to get into the digital world, using all the new fancy graphic programs like; Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere! They enable me to, simply said, put the frames one after the other, add camera movements and color correction. Drawing digitally also caught my interest since nowadays I don’t see the differences with a real pencil line anymore. It’s a great tool, making some of my work better, easier, faster and keeping my studio more clean and tidy.

My portfolio shows a lot of free work, from illustrations to developing my own short films. Next to that I like doing commissioned work, which allows me to find new visual methods and the opportunity to communicate on diverse levels to tell a story. If you are interested in working with me, don’t hesitate to contact me!
